These Dutch expression are difficult to translate into English, but we have chosen Playing School & That’s no Catwork. The first painting shows the children playing as if they were teacher and students. In the second painting Sien is telling Ot that what he is doing with the cat is not proper cat care. (Thank you, Linda, for all your help with the translation).

Ot and Sien was a children’s book series very popular in the Netherlands at the beginning of the 20th century. The author of the books was Hindericus Scheepstra, and Cornelis Jetses was the illustrator.
