This is a very rare puzzle by Schmidt. The title is The Battle of Solferino 1859, by Paul Alexandre Protais. This Battle of Solferino was a confrontation between the Austrian troops on the one side, and the French and Piedmontese forces on the other, in the Italian War of Independence. The suffering of wounded soldiers left on the battlefield, eventually led to the establishment of the International Red Cross. Schmidt manufactured this magnificent puzzle for the International Red Cross Museum in Geneva. You can admire the original painting in the Versailles museum, France.
The puzzle is NEW, with its original FACTORY SEAL. The box and its seal are in very good condition, with the exception of a dent with some minor damage in one of the corners of the lid, as you can see in the photographs.
There are also puzzles of other historical battles. Educa, for example, published a 6000 piece version of The Battle of Lepanto by Letter, and Ravensburger manufactured a 2000 piece version of The Battle of Alexander by Albrecht Altdorfer.
